Most cooling failures in the GTA come down to a short list of culprits: a failed run capacitor, a seized condenser fan motor, a refrigerant leak at a brazed joint, a clogged evaporator coil starving the system of airflow, or a control board that stopped talking to the thermostat. Each one looks the same from your living room — warm air from the vents — and each one needs a completely different repair. The rule of thumb we use is the age of the unit multiplied by the repair cost. Under twelve years old with a repair under a thousand dollars, repair almost always wins. Past fifteen years, running R‑22, or facing a compressor or coil replacement, the money is usually better spent on a new system. We quote both so you can see the comparison instead of taking our word for it.
Two things: the part and the access. A run capacitor is inexpensive and takes minutes. A condenser fan motor or contactor sits in the middle. Compressors, evaporator coils and refrigerant leak repairs sit at the top, because the labour is significant and the refrigerant has to be recovered and weighed back in to spec. We diagnose first, price second, and you approve before we start.

We do not stop at the obvious symptom. A system that fails again in three weeks usually means the first technician fixed a symptom and missed the cause.
